Living the dream in Scotland
So the Roman Emporer is hanging up his boots. One of the most polarising riders of recent years. I always liked the guy, despite being a Rossi fan. He was an arrogant arse, but a hell of a rider. To use the old Jaco Pastorious adage "It aint bragging if you can back it up." Glad to see him going out on a high, he looked like he was going to become a forgotten man after GP, but his move to supers showed he was still a force to be reckoned with.

Enjoy your retirement #3

thanks for the entertainment over the years

2 icons bow out of the sport this week Dorna are ruling over

bummer. was eager to see him defend his title next year. but good for him, max deserves some time off after being one of the top 10 riders in the world for 20 years now.

so aprilia withdraw their factory effort and let althea run it for them with guigliano and laverty, like bmw do with the goldbet team, did i get that right?

where will villain guintoli end up?

i expect kawasaki to have a very good season now that theyre the only official factory team left

Max was a great rider and hilarious personality, but I also believe one of the most misunderstood. When you learn about his background, you will understand him much better. This is why I liked and supported him. Happy retirement champ!

I really hope he writes a book. He was gone long before I started watching GP but I did watch him race a lot via motogp.com and the wsbk I did watch this year. I always had a soft spot for him.

i think its a good time for him to hang up his leathers. He will be remembered as one of the greats, and as one of the most difficult riders to work with as well.

In the grim days of Doohan beating everyone in 500s, the 250s - and Max, in particular - were what kept us up to watch the races.

He was the young Italian guy, in black Chesterfield leathers on a black Italian bike, flogging the Hondas. Then he switched to Honda and rubbed it in Aprilia's face.

Then his 500 debut. Pole, win, fastest lap.

One of my desk photos is a shot I took of him in the PI pitlane on his #4 YZR500.

Enjoy the family life, Max.

I just "liked" everyones post. Max ha always been one of my favorite riders, determined and passionate and I loved a flawed hero much more than a perfect one.;

His win this season in a strong field with so many winners and twists in the season by all of half a point is one of my favorites.

I'll remember Max as fondly as Bayliss.

Max was always my rider even most people like Valentino. He was superb in 250 racing with Ralf Waldmann, Harada, Jacque and Capirex. Moving to 500cc bike with non-factory Honda and beating Doohan on the first attempt was something. He made many mistakes (crashed while leading the races) in 1999, 2000, 2001 and 2002 and if not for the mistakes, he could have win a championship during theses years when Junior Valentino (entering motogp in 2000) was still at learning curve. 2003 and 2004 were not so bad but Max had less chance as besides Rossi there were Gibber and Melandry. 2005 was his last year in MotoGp and probably at the lowest point of his motor racing carrier.

Had Max secured a MotoGp/500 cc champion either in 1998 (runner up), 2000, 2001(runner up?) & 2002, 2005 (runner up) , he would be one of the greatest motorcycling legend of all time.

even though his performance clearly dropped off in 2004 and 2005 was a very very bad season I'd definately say he is one of the greatest.

4 strokes haven't been too kind to him (theres quite a funny supermoto video he did with hayden together that IMO shows exactly why..) and he got on the yamaha 500 at the wrong time

Max was always a gutsy and talented rider and a pleasure to watch. I have one question though; What happens to the number 1 plate?

It is Max's, right?

Do Aprilia have the right to wear the plate next year, I would think not, but not sure.

I am sitting her going, ...., I've taken too much pain medication and I'm too stoned re remember a name. This raison toast is nice though (nom nom nom). The american dude. Randy Mamola. Randy is a legend who is taken as a proper serious legend and has been rated (by people who rate such things) as the best rider ever not to get a No:1 plate.

Max got 2 x WSBK and enough 250 titles to make his trophy cabinet a holy ....... doley one. He'll be right. He's a legend.

WE think he's a legend, that's enough isn't it.

The plate belongs to the rider, max's kids will be riding around on mini bikes with the real genuine WSBK no:1 plate on it and I genuinely wish them all happiness and good fortune.
