I have a significant"0" birthday next year and I want to achieve some bucket list items, one of which is going to Philip Island  for MotoGP. Who has done this and what tips do you have for me? Would you go for  the whole weekend? What about reasonably priced accommodation? Travelling from Melbourne- do you hire a car or is there transport to the island.

Any practical comments welcomed, thanks.

Accommodation is tight. I don't know where you're travelling from, but book as early as you can.

If you are getting a house, then usually that means you pay for the whole weekend. Which means it's worth doing the whole Fri/Sat/Sun. Or, if you like the cold, you can stay at the track campground.

There are busses from Melbourne and shuttle busses on the island. The shuttles are packed (full of pissed blokes) and only ply the main routes, so you may have to walk some distance to your accommodation.

Cowes is a ........ on the GP weekend. So we usually stay home and drink/BBQ.

All that makes it sound bad.

It's not. It is a fantastic circuit, and when the weather behaves like it did on Saturday, you'll not want to be anywhere else.

Will be coming from U.K. So do you mean that there is accommodation on the island  or is it easier to get something in Melbourne and travel in daily?

I wouldn't travel in. Traffic, even on a bike, can be a total pain as there's only one road onto the island. And the drive is >2 hours.

So I suggest you find somewhere to stay on, or near (San Remo, just across the water from) the island.

Phillip Island is not heavily developed. There are hotel/motels but they will fill up quickly. If it's just you, that would be a decent choice, but once there's a few of you, a house (people rent out their houses over the weekend) is the best option.

#1 rule is book as early as you can. As in; don't leave it till when you arrive, but do it as soon as you book your plane tickets.

Looked on air bnb then decided to do the drive up from melbourne on sat and sun.

We were lucky and the traffic was fine, only took us 1.5 hours, however sunday was around 3.5 (1 hour waiting to get out of the car park).

I would stay in san remo or cowes if you don't live in melbourne. It's not worth traveling up and down.

We sat in Siberia and it was fantastic.

Good to hear, backwards.

Glad you copped some decent weather. Which is a rarity down there.

That Siberia grandstand is a great spot, will you be back?

Yes I will. We had a great weekend, despite the shambles on track. Thanks for the advice.
