Right, saw this on Twitter:

@marcpotter: It appears BT Sport's wknd MotoGP team is: Ryder, Heuwen, Gavin Emmett, Toseland & Hodgson, with Iwan Thomas and Craig Doyle on Tues night.

Thoughts?

Just one. Thomas is a sprinter, no? Why is he on a MotoGP show?

Caveat: I know nothing about British television. Is he just a really good presenter? If not, I really don't get it.

Anyone has got be better than the ....... commentary from Charlie Cox (the annoying aussie from bbc's coverage from the last couple of years)....

Having said that Hodgson will drive me up a wall after a while....

I watch all the races on motogp.com (I pay the subscription fee, it's worth it in the end if you live in the states), and Harris and Emmett are pretty good. Light years ahead of Bob Varsha and Scott Russell, anyhow. I watched the Laguna race live last year, and the commentary was so awful I almost turned it off so I could watch the replay later.

I agree, but thats because our coverage and commentary team is so piss poor, we are in effect practically forced to pay.  But looks like this is the world wide trend.  Once free coverage in the UK and Spain is going toward pay-per-view.  It all makes sense really, you see, if we just let the "job creators AKA as rich MF executives' continue to fleece the public, its a 'good thing'.   That's exactly what Povol wants for the world.  And lets expect the rich executives to 'do the right thing'.

Or as Krop put it:

It is reminiscent of the deal struck in the UK with BT Sport.  Both BT Sport and Movistar TV are broadcasting arms of large telecommunications companies, expanding their traditional services into the area of television. The telecoms giants can afford to pay much larger sums for TV rights for sports, as the sports are used to sell their broadband services and expand their customer base. Though the switch to pay-per-view platforms means losing a wider audience for MotoGP, the increased money on offer means that Dorna can invest more heavily in the championship... Krop

So you see, its a win win.  We have to pay, the telecoms get richer and can price out free wider audiences from TV rights, give it to a narrow audience, Dorna pockets the money, or as Kropo puts it 'invests in the championship'.  Canceling popular venues like Laguna for other markets like Brazil, oh wait, that was canceled.

I too have subscribed to motogp.com for this season, BT Sport are playing at it in my opinion, no coverage at all of this weeks testing and close to bugger all pertaining to Motogp on the website. I object to paying for all the other sport (football) that I don't give a monkeys about too.

Movistar (Spain) have struck a deal with Dorna for a dedicated channel, all the races and off season stuff too, I'd be happier if we had that here.

Our commentary team is beyond awful. I couldn't understand half of what Russell was saying during the Laguna race, and Varsha is clueless about MotoGP. It's almost as if SpeedTV went to him and said, "you do F1, right? Well, MotoGP is almost exactly like that, just on two wheels. Can you do it?"

Brazil was such a farce that most teams didn't even make plans to go there. That's what gets me. Whatever the reasons for cancelling Laguna, Dorna went ahead and scheduled a race in a country that didn't have one single racetrack capable of holding a MotoGP race.

These moves by Dorna to make MotoGP a pay-per-view affair are troubling. Formula One draws nearly half a billion viewers worldwide every race. Last year, they lost 50M viewers after it became clear that Vettel had no intention of losing again, ever. Even with the loss in viewership, F1 was drawing more than 400M viewers, but they're still working to increase viewership-hence the "last rase counts double rule".

MotoGP will never draw F1-level numbers, but Dorna seems determined to shrink an already-small audience. It really is all about the money for them over the long-term health of the sport.

I'm disapointed. I really like the current motogp.com crew of Nick Harris and Gavin Emmet... but now it's Nick Harris and some yet to be announced new guy. Nick and Gavin were a great team. I bet they put Ben ....... Spies in as the commentator for this season.

"yeah well you know thats racing and well yeah they do a great job and yeah he's really fast for a rookie and yeah well"

Haha I agree, but I wouldn't mind him to much hopefully after a couple of rounds he might get a bit more out of towing the PC line, especially as he's not riding and needs not make friends.

I just logged in the make a topic about this. Here's what I was going to say!

I've been listening to Keith Huewen paired up with Julian Ryder this weekend. So far I'm not enjoying it. Julian is his usual self...but Keith doesn't even come close to Toby.

I just saw Toby tweet this:

Tonight I will be commentating for my friends here on the sofa. Anyone else in?

Argh! Why isn't he in the commentary box for BTSport? Did he piss somebody off? Were people fed up with him? Did he ask for too much money? Like I said, maybe I missed the thread but watching the live broadcast right now really has me wondering.

Just had the ' pleasure ' of BT Sports coverage. Thank god they got Ryder. Emmett was fine too. But Toseland, Hodgson and Melanie Sykes....shocking

I am so glad that I am not the only one who thinks this team sucks. Melanie... What is even her purpose?

Keith constantly tries to out "Ryder" Ryder.

Grade for the group: C-/D+

Melanie = D

Toseland = C+

Hodgeson =B-

Ryder = B+

Keith = D

I enjoyed the Toseland/Hodgeson exchange about the racing. Toseland is pretty much a fish out of water everywhere else.

Ryder is great. Hodgeson's pit lane interviews are hit/miss.

Is there some history between He and Crutchlow.? It seems to be a little bit of tension.

I hope they get it together.. It's going to be a long season if they don't.

My suggestion:

- Ryder and with Toseland/Hodgeson as race commentators.

- Keith as Pit land reporter

-Gavin as anchor reporter

Nick Harris and the new guy (can't remember his name) weren't too bad. But what's going on at BT Sport sounds horrific.

They should pay Mel Sykes twice as much as she is on at the moment.............................................to stay in the house she is so plastic just like the look of her .....

Moto GP UK TV ratings after its switch to pay TV:

2013 - 1.67m [BBC]

peak: 2.12m

2014 - 187k (BT Sport)

peak: 230k

that's ....... bad figures, so an average of for every 9 people that watched last year 1 of them continued to watch this year, not good... And that doesnt even mention Eurosport coverage figures from last year, no idea how many that was but I suspect more than 230k so is prob about 1/12 people still watch altogether in the UK pretty sorry state for the sport to have lost 2million of its 2.2million views
