Dr. Costa: "Rossi could have raced at Barcelona"
Some new insights here, I find the part on the shoulder especially interesting :
From the Italian daily "La Stampa":
Dr. Costa on Rossi's recovery:
Q: Is Rossi's speedy recovery something to be compared to Doohan's?
“Doohan's was something more exceptional – said Dr. Costa to “Lastampa.it”. Immediately after the crash, Valentino wasn't keen to rush back. He had never experienced such a pain, and he only wanted to relax. They all were telling me that there was no hurry, but hey, I'm only capable to heal this way: I'm a racing doctor. Then [Valentino's] passion prevailed.
Q.: Could Rossi have raced at Assen?
A.: I set the broken bones immediately with my own hands, then chose for the operation a really extraordinary surgeon, doctor Burzi. When installing the implant, we put one screw less to allow for a quicker recovery. I was thinking of Assen, but no doubt Valentino could have raced already at Barcelona.”
Costa then talked about Rossi's shoulder injury:
“Valentino hurt himself on April 15th. He immediately came to see me and I understood there was some damage to the armpit nerves. I took him to see a specialist. Everybody, Valentino included, agreed on minimizing the importance of the accident. Motegi was due in a few days. Then the volcano erupted and that was lucky. Valentino could podium at Jerez and Le Mans, but his shoulder was not healing. He even got angry at me thinking it was my fault! I have my responsibilities, because we did not tell him clearly that the shoulder would have taken months to heal properly. However, our diagnosis was correct: the shoulder does not need any surgery. Next year, be it on a Ducati or a Yamaha, it will be as new.”
