Rossi still in pain in comeback test

Valentino Rossi says he would like to return to MotoGP for the next race in Germany, but admitted he was still in discomfort during his comeback test at Misano this evening.

Four and a half weeks after sustaining a broken right leg in a practice accident at Mugello, the world champion rode one of Yamaha's World Superbike YZF-R1s in a private testing session today.

He initially completed 11 laps with a best time of 1m41.000s, then lapped in 1m38.200s on a second run an hour later, when he covered 15 laps. The fastest race laps in the recent World Superbike event at the track were in the mid-1m36s region.

Rossi was still in pain from both his leg and the shoulder he damaged in a Motocross accident in April during the test, but said that would not deter him from attempting to be fit for the Sachsenring MotoGP race on 17 July.

"We made this test in order to understand how we must work from here and to see more or less how I can ride the bike," said Rossi. "The test was positive, because I can at least ride, but there is a lot more to a MotoGP race than to a test like this one.

"I had some pain in the ankle, the knee and the shoulder, but above all I lacked strength in the shoulder and a bit of movement in the ankle. I would really like to come back at Sachsenring, but it is still too early to say."

He did not set a firm deadline for when he had to decide whether competing at the Sachsenring would be feasible, but said his hopes depended on how effective his next stage of rehabilitation was.

"We still have 12 days and we must wait and see how much we can improve my condition in the next few days," said Rossi. "I really would like to ride at Sachsenring, but we must wait another week before making a decision."

Yamaha test rider Wataru Yoshikawa stood in for Rossi at Catalunya - Yamaha having stuck with a single bike for Jorge Lorenzo until then - and is pencilled in to ride at the Sachsenring and Laguna Seca as well if Rossi opts to revert to his original plan of returning for Brno.

he should just wait till after the summer brake.....no pun intended. if he is doing this good now he'll be in really great shape by brno.

The capabilities of highly motivated physical freaks should not be underestimated, he has obviously avoided infection and it would seem likely he has not had much soft tissue injury, so his recovery should be similar to an ordinary closed fracture now, and people of his ilk with the resources available to them often recover amazingly quickly compared to mortal men.

However his comments after the superbike test are about what you would expect, that he can ride a bike but not at full capacity or over full race distance. I don't see why he would try to come back at sachsenring as you say when even brno would be remarkable. Perhaps as someone suggested ezy has told him the whole shebang, future contracts etc will collapse if he is out for 2 more races. Maybe the ducati rumours are just that and he wants to improve his negotiating position by coming back and winning races against jorge even if he can't win the championship

How can he be ready yet!!? ...... he hasn't even gone Barra fishing

Ha! That's a fuggin low blow!.........but funny

At any rate, the guy IS NOT READY FOR MOTOGP yet! If you need crutches to get to your bike, you're not ready for a first corner trip across the gravel.....since Rossi will not take the pole in Germany his odds of a mishap increase dramatically, those first corner scuffles can be challenging....his return next race is very unlikely I suspect.

How much is his treatment helped by using a Hyperbaric Chamber ?

How much is his treatment helped by using a Hyperbaric Chamber ?

Theoretically it increases the oxygen carrying capacity of the blood which is mainly limited by your red blood cells/haemoglobin level at atmospheric pressure, increasing tissue oxygenation to aid healing. It seems to be commonly applied to elite athletes in this type of situation; whether there is scientific evidence for actual benefit I am not so sure but could find out.

Isn't a hyperbaric chamber used to fix the bends?

Barra fishing isn't usually done to those kinda depths

At least Casey got that bit right

He really should not race, it will be a sad day if he's taken out by another rider because he can't compete up front. I cant believe his contracts would be in jepordy for missing a few races were talking about Rossi not some rookie here. That's gotta be a joke.
