His urgent coming back is surprising but I find more interesting that he tests a WSB-spec R1 this week. This must be more than just a quick health-check for Rossi, for that they do not need a world spec machine. I bet Crutchlow and Toseland won´t sleep well if Rossi do not agree with the claimed problems of the ´10 bike. Hope the laptimes will be announced!

Wouldn`t the softer power of a SBK be kinder to him while he`s not 100% ,meaning that it`ll be less likely to flick him off maybe?

Why would Crutchlow or Toseland loose any sleep at all over Rossi riding a R1? Is Rossi going to WSBK now? Are Yamaha having him test the WSBK R1 to help sort out its problems? Can anyone provide a link that says it is a WSBK spec R1? The reports I have read is that it is an R1 Sports bike.

Maybe because he drives a car he is going Touring Car racing. There was a photo of him on a boat so maybe he is going offshore powerboat racing.

Damn it is comical the speculation that happens around this guy.

Is this confirmed, just because someone says he's coming back doesn't mean he is, hell for all we know he will be in Germany to do promotional work. If in fact Rossi is coming back to race, I think it's a big mistake and not worth the risk.

Valentino Rossi will make an astonishing return to action when he tests a Yamaha at the Misano circuit in Italy on Wednesday afternoon.

The 31-year-old Italian broke his leg on June 5 in a huge highside during practice for the Italian Grand Prix at Mugello.

Rossi, a seven-time MotoGP world champion, had been expected to be on the sidelines for three or four months after suffering the compound fracture to his shin, although he had spoken of a desire to return to racing at next month's Czech Grand Prix at Brno.

But a successful test later on Wednesday, aboard a YZF-R1 superbike provided by the Japanese manufacturer's World Superbike Championship team,

Cool, stand corrected. Still think it is comical that comments about Toseland and Crutchlow loosing sleep is added.

The laptimes would be very interesting - especially a comparison with Spies on thw WSBK Yam.

first session time at misano the other week before the track rubbered in and superpole

1 35 C. CRUTCHLOW GBR Yamaha Sterilgarda Team Yamaha YZF R1 1'36.288

Edit :

A statement for Yamaha said:

“The test will take place using a YZF-R1 WSB machine provided by the Yamaha World Superbike Team to the Fiat Yamaha Team. Yamaha will inform the media later today of the results of the test and of Valentino's condition.”

Lap times would be irrelevant in a test like that -- it is a test of his body, to assess how it can handle riding a race bike in those conditions. I do not think he wants to break any records!

Ok, I was exaggerating a little (?
<
), but we remember Bayliss hopping on the 1198 and put both factory riders in shame not so long ago. I kinda see a similar situation with the riders at Sterilgarda Yamaha. Both British riders crash a lot this year and they are nowhere in the championship and they blame the ´10 bike about it. The fact that Crutchlow comes up with several pole positions but very rare podium finishes does not help to see the clear picture (not to mention that their No1-rider may not yet be through his hard period after the unsuccess of MotoGP).

I think Yamaha has two aims with this test, they will get a feedback from (one) the best rider of the world about their WSB-spec bike so they will have a clearer picture about the bike and about their riders... they can also check the state of their golden egg.

Btw an 1000 ccm WSB-spec bike is definitely not much down on power from the 800 GP-machine, it even has a lot more torque (and less electronic). It is heavier but that also does not make it easier to handle for an injured rider.

Of course I do not think that Rossi would like to change to WSB (any soon), but I am sure he follows WSB, sees the way more exciting racing and I bet with his ex-archrival leading the championship on an Italian bike the Italian press is going crazy...so altogether these things can ignite some thoughts in his mind, but that´s all.

Risking Rossi's career in order to save this season's TV ratings? I wonder how many TV contracts expire at the end of 2010?

I think Ezpeleta is trying to pressure Rossi to return before he is ready.

I got a feeling it's Rossi wanting to come back because thats the type of person he is. Motorcycle racing is his life and he cant wait to get back to it.

I don't get why everybody is so shocked. First of all, the final decision is Rossi's. If he feels he can race then so be it. We've had riders with broken bones ride, so what is the big deal? We've had guys with broken ankle(s), legs, arms, shoulders, and much worse soft tissue injury, etc. These guys are not like us, they heal faster because they are in outstanding shape, they get the best medical attention, and to add, they are competitive by nature. Dorna moves for Rossi, not the other way around. If he want to race I say do it, plus this will give the Boppers something more to worship (yeah, I know, they don't need encouragement). Rossi isn't dumb either, he knows anywhere he circulates will be met with fantastic over the top admiration. Who wants to bet me the Boppers will be energized to a fever pitch? God knows all they've managed to do with that energy is step up the Stoner hate. Its a win win if Rossi comes back, he knows it too.

there's a car trackday going off there so i think Vales outing will be after that...

Yeah I dont see any problems with him testing. He can ride a bike without falling, and heck its probably a good thing, he needs to stay in condition. As for racing think thats not such a great idea, if he has an off, his season and possible career could end. The season is done for him, so why bother pushing it this year.
