According to quotes from Dorna CEO Carmelo Ezpeleta on Spanish website AS, Valentino Rossi will race at the next round of the MotoGP series, at Germany’s Sachsenring in less than two weeks. Rossi, who broke his tibia and fibula in a crash at Mugello early last month, had originally hoped to return to action for the Brno Grand Prix in mid-August, but he has moved that date up considerably, according to Ezpeleta. “Valentino will race in Germany,” Ezpeleta told AS. “I’ve known since Assen. It’s great news.”

European news outlets are also reporting that Rossi will test a Yamaha YZF-R1 sport bike at Misano tomorrow, to test the leg.

If true, this is an incredible comeback for Rossi–just three days more than a month from break to riding, and less than two months from break to racing. Dr. Buzzi, who performed the operation to set the bone in Florence after the crash, had predicted a six-month layoff. The nine-time world champion has been using a hyperbaric chamber in an effort to speed up the healing process, and at this past weekend’s Catalunya Grand Prix, the word in the pressroom was that Vale was spending the weekend at his house on the Spanish island of Ibiza.

Prior to breaking his leg, Rossi had injured his shoulder in a motocross crash, and the time off has given him time to heal that injury as well.

I guess anything is possible till its not, but this is not about the championship. Him coming back so quick has its risks and im not so sure the risks are worth the gains. The only thing Yamaha has to gain out of this is the team title. Im not sure what the team title is worth monetarily, but it seems to be worth the risk. Rossi is not going to win the title, and the way the constructors title is set up, counting only the top finisher per race, Yamaha is going to win that as well. The team title takes points for both riders per race, and the replacement isnt garnering many team points. If he can run in the top 6-7, it will counter what Pedro and Dovi are doing.

Risking Rossi's career in order to save this season's TV ratings? I wonder how many TV contracts expire at the end of 2010?

I think Ezpeleta is trying to pressure Rossi to return before he is ready.

Sounds like a really bad idea to me. First, he won't be very competitive, second, he's risking far to much to make what will amount to little more than a publicity stunt on behalf of his sponsors and DORNA who desperately want his "fans" tuning in to GP again......

Rossi at 50% is still probably better than 2/3rd's of the field but until he's fit enough to have another off, he should not be racing.....I could see him taking laps somewhere to build fitness and test his strength but to jump back in to GP so quickly seems foolish. I give him great credit for his determination and spirit but this presents a huge opportunity for greater trauma and the potential for a career ending injury. No good!!

Too me, the only positive will be for Lorenzo. JL will continue to dominate and no longer will his championship be attributed to VR missing the majority of the season....I doubt seriously that Rossi will challenge for a win inside of 2 or 3 races. Who knows? He certainly has the heart to compete but another off would be simply tragic if it were to cause re-injury to his leg.

Good luck VR!

I completely agree, i was shocked when I found the article. Theres no way hes recovered from this.

I would say this is deeply rooted in negotiations for next year whether it is securing the Yamaha ride or the Ducati ride. Maybe Dorna is leveraging their assistance in his Ducati salary to get him back out there even if it is just to circulate.

Mind you just circulating for Rossi is still probably a top ten finish!

There wasn't any racing when Rossi was present either. We haven't seen any racing since Catalunya 2009 when we got one of the greatest races of all time. Silverstone was the best race this season. Rossi wasn't around.

The sport doesn't need Rossi, it's just a lot better when he is around. He's probably the only person powerful enough to demand a 1000cc bike and actually get it. Worked with Bridgestones.

I don't get some of you.

Half the time you rave about how bad Dorna is for the sport ...... then you rave on how good all the "popularity" that Dorna has brought is

Bring back the ole days where they turned up to race in a Commer van that had seen half the world I say!!

of course the sport does not need rossi, he´ll be gone in a couple of years and the sport will stay , but until we get the 1000cc bike hes our only hope for good racing, the only one capable of matching lorenzo at the moment until casey gets his .... straight(if he ever does) and we can´t count on pedro cause he is too inconsistent , would you agree?

Rossi Epic Fail ............and that's without even reading the article
