That make me think I'll be a Spies man after the yellow clown retires.

Combination of humour & skill (WSBK Race 1 Misano 2008!), he gets a lot of respect from me.

Big cheese Spies. Like it.

Spies is clearly a decent guy, but i find him incredibly dull. I know he is reserved in his nature, but it'd be nice if he conveyed something interesting or perhaps some passion. Having said that, i'm not forgetting this guy is a racer and he is awesome in that department.

Its funny isn't it that Spies comes across like that, but generally people (including myself), don't see it in a negative light.

Yet Pedrosa has been slated for his robot-like personality.

Spies comes across as a serious businessman who isnt afraid to cut loose and smile and have some fun in a reserved kind of way. I like it.

Poor Dani reminds me of a abused child who resents the path life has taken him. He does not appear to know how to have a good time, and as a result has become anti social. I still believe if he would .... can Puig, it would set him free. Puig is Dani's abuser

Ahh yep. Race fans are so used to Rossi acting like the host on some Italian children's

show, with the winking and clowning - that they feel other riders are dull - when they behave

like a normal adult. Perhaps that speak to the general character of a certain segment

of the race fan scene. Anybody out there need a pacifier or a juice box or a time out?

It's easy to say that, and the same thought crossed my mind. But i don't think its necessarily about being a clown or being a bit cute and silly or generally having a childish charm. Fans are generally more inclined to like a rider if they feel they can connect with them in some way, Nicky Hayden is an excellent example of a universally popular rider who isn't a clown but remains miles apart from the Spies and Pedrosas of the grid.

The point is not that only clownish personas are attractive - but rather a great majority of the

not so hardcore race fans are drawn to Rossi's circus entertainer persona.

Whereas down to earth riders like Hayden and Spies seem more to cultivate serious fans of racing, rather than

joiners who look to participate in a cult of personality. The Spies fan is about the racing and not so concerned

with Ben's celebrity. The guy is very low key and doesn't waste time on creating a public persona. He's the

Gary Cooper of MGP. I don't think it's fair to compare Hayden and Spies. Hayden's been around the MGP circuit for many more years. When Spies has been around for a comparable number of years he will have acquired his share of fans; much the same ones that found Kenny Roberts so appealing - because he's very much in that same quiet American vein.

I think we are talking about things, you are putting Hayden and Spies in the same group as being 'down to earth types of people', while i'm talking about the difference appeal from someone like Spies or Pedrosa who have a generally business like persona, to someone like Hayden or Rossi who's personality (or comfort with their fame) makes their emotions available to fans. Maybe Spies will become accustomed to the attention he gets, but maybe this is just his demeanour (like Dani it would seem) and those who get him will just get him.

I "get" what you're saying. I just don't agree that Pedrosa and Spies are alike in any way.

Pedrosa is a frightened little boy who shirks the spotlite always looking like he's just been molested by his Uncle Flaco.

Spies on the other hand is self-assured, forthcoming and eloquent when it's required - and as has been shown in the

videos with CE 2 - capable of solid good humor, even to the point of parodying himself as the stolid, man of few words

Texan.

yes of course there are fans of Rossi who pertain to the antics, however there is also a large majority of hardcore race fans who appreciate the talent of the man. So I certainly wouldn't place stereotypes across the board for Hayden or Rossi fans.

It could also be said that some only support Nicky because he's American.....hardly a hardcore racing fans POV?

As has been maintained... nobody (alleged "haters" included) seriously downplays Rossi's abilities.

And as you said - there are admirers of Rossi and "Rossfans".

It's a given that enthusiasts will root for champions from their own country. Yet you will have noticed

among the hard-core American enthusiasts who regularly root for Hayden, Spies et al; there is a marked appreciation for riders like Haga, Crutchlow, Chili, Bayliss, Doohan etc who project a certain straight-ahead, no ........ quality.
