Your question is for someone with far more insider knowledge than either of us have. We do not know how well the old front would work with the new rear. The issue with soft tires is usually related to longevity. Providing soft tires only for them to start chunking halfway though the race isn't good for anyone (we don't need another COTA 2014).
The new Michelin soft front was giving excellent longevity, breezing through a very hot Doha race. Strange how it's not deemed fit for recent cooler races where Yamaha were reportedly struggling to get heat into their front tyres.
Rossi's more point and squirt, heavy braking (compared to Lorenzo) helps marginally, giving him a distinct advantage over his team mate. He's made no secret he'd rather have harder tyres in order to negate any threat from Lorenzo.
