AMA Rulebook 2011

I've not really read through the sporting codes that closely, but I have read through the technical regulations. Here are the big changes, imo.

SBK:

1. All data systems must be homologated on the eligible equipment list. Already the case for ECUs and piggyback ECU systems, but now all datalogging equipment must be homologated. Not sure if this is a ploy to charge more homologation fees or if they are moving towards regulating the electronics. I guess it's wait and see.

2. Frames that act as fuel cells can be modified for capacity. Clearly a Buell rule, but I have no idea how they plan to keep things fair if Buell can alter their frames. Perhaps innocuous, perhaps diabolical. Another wait and see situation.

DSB:

1. Triples get a 5 lb weight reduction to 370lbs. I guess this is a pro-Triumph and pro-MV change.

2. No strengthening gussets or brackets may be added to the frame. Imo, this is a really big change. I don't know how much chassis development the 600s were getting, but eliminating frame modifications probably makes bike prep a lot easier. I wonder how much performance will be affected.

3. Velocity stack can be modified, replaced with aftermarket, or removed. Doesn't look like eligible equipment rules apply either. No idea who this is supposed to help, but I suppose it is the addition of a racing modification.

The elimination of frame mods in DSB is a big deal, imo, b/c frame gussets and brackets allow the manufacturers to reinforce soft production frames and tune the frames to work with new forks and rear shocks. Frame bracketing also allows riders to tune the frame to their liking. I don't know the motivation for eliminating frame modifications, but it seems like a really big deal.
