Alex de Angelis undergoing further medical checks

Update 12/10/2015: On Monday, De Angelis had a head and chest CT scan, which reassuringly showed that the intracranial hematoma he suffered was unchanged while the contusions to his lungs are slightly resolving. The rider remains in a critical condition but as his sedation was reduced, he was able to talk and oriented in time and space. He'll undergo a further head CT scan in the next 48 to 72 hours to ensure the intracranial hematoma is stable while the conditions of the lungs will need further evaluation.

MotoGP™ Safety Adviser Loris Capirossi and FIM Grand Prix Safety Officer Franco Uncini visited de Angelis on Monday morning; during his treatment in Japan, the rider is assisted by Dr Michele Zasa from the Clinica Mobile.

He posted a pic of himself on Facebook giving the thumbs up. Looked beat up, but he also looked like he knew where he was. This is good.

Good to hear about the tweet :)

Was concerned after hearing he was in induced coma with bleeding on the brain, was thinking of Schumacher and Bianchi type situation.

If he can use social media this is promising :)

Dang, didn't realize he was this messed up. Speedy recovery.

Actually read a small 'article' (in inverted commas because it was a forum article and not media) where it listed some of the injuries from un-named sources and it was concerning and indicated that he may have been far worse that initially released (yes, there was a Dorna conspiracy to the post)

Good news on the health front but a long way to go.

Krop, any news on what he actually hit and/or the cause?

He lost control, hung on the handlebars, a bit like Simoncelli did, and ran into the armco. Freak accident, and hard to plan for. Like Simoncelli, if he'd let go, it would have turned out differently.

Right now, there are still 2 major threats to his health. Most direct threat is the bruise on his lung, which means basically that there is a bunch of blood in his lungs, and he can't breathe properly (hence the oxygen mask), and is at risk of picking up a potentially fatal infection. From what I was reading, if he does pick up an infection, the mortality rate is 25%. That situation should clear up within 5 days of the incident. The other problem is the bleeding in the brain. That is, as I understand it, small, and being closely monitored. If it gets worse, it could go bad quickly. But it has remained stable, which is a positive sign.

Holy ..... That's sucks. Well, he is young, and lets hope his body can repair itself enough to save his life. If he tweeted a pic with thumb up that's very good.

These dudes are extraordinarily determined, hence why I think they hold on to bars like that. Its the same reason why we often see rider and bike cartwheel, when he is about to stop starts running to the annihilated machine to see if it's still "ridable".

Hope he has a full recovery.

Shovel, apparently there was no TV coverage video but there is likely security camera footage from around the circuit so it is unlikely to be made public (personally I hope that it is used to determine improvements or cause and does not become public material)

I'm sure something will surface. Crazy that they have over 20 cameras and all seem to be focused on the VR, Jlo, Marq, and this race, Pdr. There has got to be at very least a sequence photos. Regardless, it's a dangerous sport, and yes we can improve, but some stuff will always happen. There was a driver who crashed head on at close to 100mph into barriers in this weekend's F1. Happened during practice, dude raced. Then they had the incident when they put a crane into a wet track in an impact zone. Anyway, hope he can race again. As much as I've made fun of him, I admire his tenacity and ability to do what I only dream of, so hope all turns out well.

Haha for a split sec I thought it was a pic flipping the bird. Actually that would have been cool if he did.

(Note to sell, if I ever survive a motocrash, flip the bird to pic taker).

He looks good. Bet this dude is on the start grid next year.

The Iodaracing team's latest update as of 14th October

Today, was a quiet day for Alex de Angelis at the Dokkyo University Hospital in Mibu, Japan.

The Team e-motion Iodaracing rider was reached by his father Vinicio and his brother William, who are assisting their relative Alex in the intensive care unit of the Japanese hospital together with Clinica Mobile's MD. Michele Zasa.

The clinical condition of Alex de Angelis, after the tremendous crash in FP4 in the Japanese GP at Motegi, are stable.

Both the pulmonary edema and the intracranial are under close observation by the Dokkyo University Hospital's doctors. Tomorrow, Thursday, October 15, will be verified with some specific tests… to check his lungs status.

A new MRI, finally, will be made in the coming days to monitor the intracranial edema.

Update for today (Thanks to Krop for the link):

Alex De Angelis Medical Conditions UPDATE ? October 15 | Iodaracing Project

Mibu (Japan) October 15, 2015 - Clinica Mobile MD Michele Zasa Mobile gave the picture of the Alex De Angelis clinical situation after six days from his admission in the Dokkyo University Hospita’s ICU.

Alex De Angelis, reports Dr. Zasa, continues to be stable, without any important changes in his clinical picture.

De Angelis is conscious. The cerebral hematoma, emerged one day after the terrible crash he hade during the FP4 in Motegi, currently doesn’t worry, it probably will reabsorb themselves, unless complications.

The situation of the spine cord that is also stable, at the time Alex De Angelis cannot do anything but rest. According to MD. Zasa, once at home, the Team e-motion Iodaracing rider will rise, with a brace that he will hold still for several weeks.

The situation that concerns the pulmonary contusion, is the most delicate at the moment. Although Alex has always had good gas exchange, an X-ray done yesterday, shows that the lungs ventilate relatively well but there are areas of atelectasis, under control. The next 2 or 3 days will be important to verify the stability of the gas exchange, and to assess the situation according to pulmonary therapies in place.

Update from crashnet

Injured MotoGP racer Alex de Angelis is set to leave hospital in Japan on Sunday and return home to San Marino.

The Ioda rider suffered head, lung, vertebrae, rib, sternum and collarbone injuries in a practice accident at Motegi on October 10.

de Angelis, who has not suffered any spinal cord injury, will travel in a horizontal position to avoid straining his back and be accompanied on the flight by a doctor and his father Vinicio.

The #15 will be taken to the State Hospital of San Marino to continue his recovery.

“Finally, if all goes in the right way, I'll return back home!” de Angelis said. “Of course I will not really be in my house, but in the State Hospital of San Marino where I'll meet again all my friends and where I can finally talk again in Italian with the health care personnel.

“I want to take this opportunity to thank first of all my family, my father and my brother, that reached as far as Japan to me, my team and [team boss] Giampiero Sacchi that I have been very close in these days and not least Dr. Michele Zasa from Clinica Mobile that was close to me many days by coordinating the work of his Japanese colleagues in the hospital and my return to San Marino too.

“I am very sorry for what happened because I wanted to make a beautiful Asian trip, but in the end all went well, because I have hard injuries, but nothing that will prevent me from continuing to race and for this I'm happy. From when I get home ahead, it's waiting for me a long and difficult rehabilitation, but there is the time and the desire to return on the saddle as soon as I can.

“I don't hide that I would be in Valencia, if I will, to say hello to all the paddock people, perhaps using the Clinica Mobile to continue to do my therapy. Right now I don't want to forget anyone once again thanking all those who have sent me messages – millions – on both personal and socials.

“Knowing that there are many people who wants you back in action is fantastic in these difficult times. Staying stuck in bed all the time is boring, then every second spent on reading a message was an enjoyable time. I will be back soon!”
