Is this guy pretty good? As I mentioned before - I just got into MotoGP last season... don't know much about this guy... His wikipedia page didn't seem too impressive. I would have thought "the best motorcycle manufacturer" would've been able to find a better tester to replace Dani.

I would love to see Dovi fighting for the title... but it just seems like Dani is slowing the development of the RC212V. Dovi deserves better than that, and I hope Honda will be listening to him this weekend.

In comparison to MotoGP regulars, test riders generally also-rans at best with a few exceptions. My guess is he'll be lucky to crack the top 15.

I was gonna type the exact same thing. He is a good rider, but not MotoGP caliber. That's why I've predicted that Hopkins will test in Cat and Brno for the factory team (regular riders can't test).

He assumed the mantle in 06 I think from Ukawa. Haven't heard his name since he stepped up for the wild card ride at Mugello last year.

He's probably been given a desk job or pensioned off early by HRC - he was after all 104 years old at his last birthday.

Apparently, he wasn't too good a tester. His lackluster skills led Nicky Hayden to make a reasonably harsh (by 69 standards) comment regarding the shortcommings of the pnumatic valve engine. 'He has to say that [that the bike is ready for Dani to test], he's a Honda guy. The bikes not ready'

What is your opinion of this?

Given both Dani and Dovi's pedigree (250s), I doubt they have significanly differing development desires when it comes to chassis, tires, suspension. That said, Dani is 51kg. Dovi is significantly heavier and a bit taller. That mass differential is substantial enough to seriously affect the bike performance. Basically bigger riders need smooth and plentiful torque.

I've heard rumours that Nicky kept asking for a flat thick torque curve, where Dani prefers the peaky sharp power rush and can deal with a narrow power band. I'm not sure why this is an issue, it's mostly electronics. But If Dani is requesting changes to bore and stroke ratios, then Dovi is in for a ROUGH SEASON

Also, maybe Dovi's acne is hurting aero dynamics? LOL!

If Puig is still running the show then Dovi is ....... That's all there is too it. Honda would be smart into putting some effort into Dovi. He is a great rider who could possibly achieve great things. Early on, it appears that Dovi isn't going to take a back seat like Hayden did and he is going to voice his opinions. Not sure if that;s going to help him out, especailly at Honda.

Is Dani slowing developement? Yes. Anytime that you have a rider taking more time on the bench than riding a bike during developement time then you surely arn't helping at all. But I am not really understanding your quote above. Do you mean that Honda is waiting on Dani to setup and develope the bike and while he is down even though Dovi is out there they won't listen to him and make the changes he requests?

There's also Dani's explicit request that this year's bike be a very minor evolution of last year's one.

Those are all exactly my wonderments. I know that Dani doesn't want much of a change. But since I am more pro -Dovi, I am hoping that they will give him all that he wants and not freeze development for Dani.

Dani just seems to be killing Honda's chances at catching up with Yamy and Ducati - and Dovi seems like a smart kid who knows what he wants and needs to succeed.

to be fair, honda's bike last year weren't the best. if yamaha and ducati have moved the game on even further, then dani's request for minor changes won't help honda catch up. dani's input into developing any of the rc212vs so far hasn't been the best, so it's worth taking a bit of a gamble and listening to fresh advice ie dovi and seeing what he has to say.

I just hope that is what Honda is thinking ... to get them back to fighting status

Honda can kiss my ... for all I care. The last two years have been a joke. I feel bad for Dovi because I really like him but he knew what he was getting into before he signed on. It's not like the whole Dani Nicky thing wasn't public knowledge. Now he takes on that uphill battle.

I also like how Honda gives the shaft to all its privateer teams

Very True... I think he has what it takes for the uphill though.

Factory Honda beats satellite Honda, and Dani's rapidly approaching the point where he pretty much needs a championship to maintain top billing. Taking on that uphill battle when by some estimations Pedrosa's heading into a make or break year isn't too awful. No, he won't likely get to lead development, but he'll be a bit ahead of the sat riders and if/when Dani/Puig's influence dies he'll be there to pick up the pieces.

No doubt. I like how you think!

i think pedrosa cant handle the big boys engine.
<
give him the puny spring valve and let him play...
