"MotoGP 06/04/07
Valentino Rossi’s victory at Jerez not only took him to the top of
the World Championship standings, but it also kept his MotoGP
victory percentage ‘in the black’. Ending his run of 5 races
without a win, the five time MotoGP World Champion increased
his tally of triumphs to 59 from 116 starts, giving him a
participation-victory percentage of 50.8%
Rossi first broke the 50% mark five years ago at the 2002
British Grand Prix, having taken 20 victories during his 40 race
tenure in the premier class. At his most dominant, Rossi’s win
rate peaked at the 2005 Czech Grand Prix at an astonishing
56%.
Rossi has the fourth best percentage of all time (out of riders
who have competed in a minimum of 20 races), behind John
Surtees, Giacomo Agostini and Mike Hailwood. Of riders in the
‘modern era’, the Italian is far ahead of the next best rider, Mick
Doohan, who ended his career with 54 wins from 137 races.
‘The Doctor’ is aiming to add yet another race to his list in
Turkey, one of only three tracks on this year’s calendar where
he hasn’t reigned supreme. Countryman Marco Melandri has a
perfect record at the scene of the next round of the MotoGP
World Championship, likewise Nicky Hayden at Laguna Seca in
the USA. The only other circuit where Rossi has not tasted
victory is Misano, which hosts a Grand Prix for the first time".

My only clarification on this one record would be that Surtees, Agostini and Hailwood participated in more than one category at the same time in several years, maybe even worse, because racing different categories on the same weekend on my view is harder to maintain the wining average. I could be wrong if they were on a roll, who knows.
Guess it is like comparing (in all categories) Agostini’s 15 Championships, Hailwood’s 9, Surtees 7, for the same reason. What do you think?
