Jeans kind of keep me from pushing the limit,The more protected i am,the crazier i get.Besides,since i got me a new titanium knee a couple of years ago,its like having built in sparky pucks. I probably should get me a set of leathers but they are so hard to find for a guy my size and when i do find them in the right size, they fit weird because of my backwards ... dimensions.I am 6'5", weigh 250 lbs and have a 34" inseam which is 2-3 inches shorter than normal for someone that height but my torso is 2-3 inches longer which ..... everything up unless i get something custom made. I have some ballistic nylon touring pants but they are hot as hell in the summer. Leathers protect you in a slide,the roads we ride if you go down,there isnt much sliding.You go down,your in the trees or off the edge.

No excuses, get some leathers. When I wrecked, if I would have been wearing leathers I could have hidden it from my wife, but since I was wearing riding jeans and crappy boots I was pretty messed up. Lesson learned, now I don't leave the house without full protection. I do understand the size thing, I am 6'2 190 but I have gorilla arms. I can get the large talls but they never seem to make them comfortable for the arms. I have a pair of those nylon pants and yeah it looks like I drove through a puddle when I ride in the summer, but I don't give .... as long as I give myself the best shot possible if I go down.

He does bring up a point. A point that many riders in this country struggle with. They change when they get on a bike. And like Povol, he suddenly thinks he's indestructible with protective gear. That leads him to do things he would otherwise not do.

Povol mentally has two places he can be. The wannabe racer with the leathers (used in terms that describe his riding style and not the look). Or he can be Mr. Cautious. The one who gets on the bike and thinks more about what he is doing.

Is he taking a risk? Yes, but you can still die or suffer severe injuries on the bike with leathers, as you would without leathers. You might not end up with large road burns on his body, but he could very well get hit by a car and crushed to death.

It's more about being aware. When I ride, I ride with the idea that no other people car see me (as in Michigan, it is usually the case with only 3-4 months of good riding weather), so you are 100% aware of what your riding on.

So I can wear shorts, sandles and no helmet as long as I understand the risks and take it easy while I'm riding Who cares if you ride cautiously, what about the deer that jumps out in front of you, or the sand that was accidentlay dumped on the road etc. Full protection and ride cautiously, why would you not give yourself the best chance possible?

If a deer jumps out in front of you, your ...... no matter what your wearing. Same with a car. Your going 40-45 mph and some old women pulls out in front of you and takes you out, you might not have lost skin to the pavement, but you probably broke your legs, your arms, either way your .......

All this gear is fine if you have a fall like curve did. But if you happen to have a crash with a car, animal, road debris, your ...... no matter what you are wearing.

No argument,your right. I do wear a good jacket that has more protection than leathers and i wear good gloves,good boots and an expensive Shoei helmet. I will look into some pants that will zip into my leather jacket that i hardly ever wear for the same reasons i stated above. Its a size 50 US and fts perfect thru the shoulders but unless i pull my pants up like Ekle,the damn thing is 3-4 inches short

We all should be allowed to choose want we wear. If not we will be sitting in two wheeled cages packed with air bags, ac, ipod adapter, rearview mirrors, etc...

Not necessarily so... my bro cracked into a deer with his GF on the back. She was catapulted off the back and sustained some serious roadrash (since she DECIDED to remove her leathers 'cause of increasing temperatures) - he on the other hand had a severely bruised knee from impact (which would have been broken without leathers/knee protection and no other injuries after his impact and slide with leathers on. BTW tow truck dude brought both his bike and the deer back to his house and after crying over the bike we had a feast!
