It is perhaps a sign of increasing age, but whilst I still believe there is no substitute for horsepower, there is probably no substitute for common sense either.

About 12 years ago I drove down after work on a whim to Big CC to look at a 750 Katana - remember them? with the novelty pop up headlight - (that's the only reason I wanted it...I always wanted a TR7 as a kid for that reason as well
<
). I think they were in Bracknell at the time. Took it out round the ring road, it ran well, and was mint. The real reason I was interested is that being quite scarce, I thought it would be a bit of a collectors piece, and hold its price. Shaun who builds these monsters was a really nice guy, and I stopped down there for about two hours talking to him. He showed me round (it was only a small unit at that time) but he had several projects on the go and it was quite clear that along side the dealing, it was a real labour of love and he really really knew his stuff. I've read many reviews of his work in everything from Street Fighters to Fast Bikes, and I'm not surprised to learn that this is purely what they do now, and that they are now one of the countries premier project bike builders.

Anyway, I gave him an £80 deposit and said I'd come back to collect it in a week with the balance. Unfortunately in the meantime I was tempted by a Z1300 of all things in a breakers which had light repairable cosmetic damage, and needed a new CDI unit. That was a steal at £1200. So I rang him and asked If he could mail me the deposit back and he told me to get ......

We had an agreement he said and if I wanted my money back I had to come down, ride it again and tell him I didn't want it, and he'd refund me accordingly.
<
whereupon I told him to get ...... and shove the money up his arse

Actually, I think he knows one or two of the Outlaws, so if you're reading this Shaun, you're a top top bloke and I'm honoured that my £80 went towards buiding and expanding such a worthy enterprise as Big CC.

Seriously, he was real good guy, and I suppose I was lucky that he even offered to return the money. I never bought the six pot Kwak, probably for the best...I was tempted instead by a Canadian grey import V Max which turned out to be a complete beast. As if V boost wasn't manic enough maybe I should've asked Shaun to lob a supercharger on it as well - he had £80 to be going on with.

Anyone know where I could come by a 750 Kat these days?

i liked the kat's altho it was the 1100 that took my eye. Remember the xN 85 turbo ? looked good but the gpz 750 turbo was the boy. Z1300's were good but pron to chucking rods so you made the right decision to steer clear. Canadian max's were the babys to get with the full 150 unlike its yank cousin. the french one only had 100 bhp. you bought back some memorys there mate, cheers.

I had the 650, and the 1100 - the latter handled like a longboat, but they were so radical at the time and they still turn heads today. Added to which, the mighty GS mill was indestructible!

[wistful nostalgia]i had the 750 for a couple of years. ended up having to sell it to get a 1991 gsx-r750. that katana was an iconic bike and yes, the motor was strong. i loved that bike...[/wistful nostalgia]
