British Superbikes was at Cadwell Park during the bank holiday for another 3 races of action. Cadwell was the penultimate race before the championship showdown commences. While most of the spots are more or less clinched, there was an outside possibility that a few outsiders would be able to steal a few places in the standings and make a charge for the showdown.

Race 1 Results
Bradley Ray started on pole for the Ebay Sprint race and got the holeshot, followed by Rory Skinner and Jason O'Halloran. Surprising everyone in 4th place was Danny Buchan, who had found the right setup for his BMW M1000RR. Cadwell is notoriously difficult to overtake so everything remained static at the front, until Tommy Bridewell eeked into the top-5 on lap 3, and then started setting fast laps in an attempt to bridge the gap to the front runners. By lap 5, Bridewell was right on Danny Buchan's rear wheel, which prodded Buchan to put pressure on O'Halloran. On lap 7, Buchan finally moved O'Halloran's Yamaha out of the way to take 3rd place. Bridewell was eager to move through on his Panigale, but he seemed to lack a bit of drive out of the corners, and could not get by, even while setting fastest laps. Race finishing order was Ray, Skinner, Buchan, O'Halloran, and Bridewell. Though it got little TV time, the battle for 7th place was raging between a train of riders: Haslam, A Irwin, G Irwin, Sykes, Iddon, Mackenzie, Ryde, Brookes, and Vickers who were mugging each other from the race midpoint. Eventually Sykes would end up on the receiving end of an ill-advised late overtake from Iddon.

Race 2 Results
O'Halloran got the Race 2 holeshot, but he was quickly overtaken by Danny Buchan, who took the lead in a BSB race for the first time in 2022. When the dust settled after Lap 1, the running order was Buchan, O'Halloran, Skinner, Ray, and Bridewell, but unlike Race 1, the top 5 were not able to work together as a unit to break clear, allowing Andy Irwin, Leon Haslam and Peter Hickman to tag along. Unfortunately, Haslam made a move on Andy Irwin, which caused the trio to lose touch with the top-5, but fortunately, Ray, Skinner, and Bridewell started battling, and the 8 rider train re-formed. At mid-distance riders started making moves. Ray dispensed with O'Halloran to take 2nd place, and he started setting fastest laps to catch Buchan. Two laps later, Tommy Bridewell would demote Jason O'Halloran to 4th. Rory Skinner started showing O'Halloran his front wheel, but his overtaking moves would be foiled when Haslam got by and stole 5th place. On Lap 13 O'Halloran lost his rhythm or had a minor issue, allowing Haslam, Skinner, A Irwin, and Hickman to get by. At the front, Ray had caught Buchan, but the Syntiq BMW rider made himself very fast and very wide, and Brad couldn't find a way through. The race finished Buchan, Ray, Bridewell, Haslam and Skinner. For the second race in succession, neither Mackenzie nor Ryde would factor in the results at the front.

Race 3 Results
Race 3 was very similar to Race 2. Buchan took the lead with Ray in tow. O'Halloran had great early position in 3rd. Bridewell was 4th with Haslam in 5th, and the two FS-3 Kawasakis in 6th and 7th, though Jackson would eventually get a 10 second penalty for a jump start. So Danny Buchan led from flag to flag with Bradley Ray hanging out in his slipstream, unable to get by as Danny rode an inch perfect race. Bridewell felt very little pressure from behind because O'Halloran was moving backwards and acting as a road block. Eventually, A Irwin, Haslam, and Skinner would all breakthrough O'Halloran. A couple of laps later Haslam and Skinner would use their ZX-10RR's to shake off Irwin's BMW, but as the Kawasaki riders diced, the duel for 4th became a battle royale between Haslam, Skinner, A Irwin, and Hickman, with Lee Jackson trying to mitigate the damage from this time penalty. The race finished Buchan, Ray, Bridewell, Haslam and Skinner, as Haslam used his wiley veteran riding skills to block everyone behind him and Skinner used his raw pace to fend off Hickman who finished in 6th.

Championship Standings - Top 8 After Cadwell Park
1. 372 - Bradley Ray
2. 359 - Jason O'Halloran
3. 241 - Rory Skinner
4. 225 - Lee Jackson
5. 214 - Glenn Irwin
6. 201 - Tommy Bridewell
7. 186 - Tarran Mackenzie
8. 178 - Kyle Ryde
9. 164 - Danny Buchan
10. 144 - Peter Hickman
11. 143 - Leon Haslam

So Danny Buchan has taken a sledgehammer to the Showdown picture with his weekend-topping 66 point performance. He is 14 behind Ryde and 22 behind Mackenzie, who should both be counting their lucky stars that Peter Hickman did not post a career best 66 points this weekend. Brad Ray had an excellent 65 point weekend, as he put himself back on top of the championship standings. Bridewell also managed to cement his place (though it's still drying) in the showdown with a 43 point weekend. Leon Haslam had his best weekend with 34 points. Rory Skinner also bounced back with 42 points, his highest weekend total since scoring 44 at Oulton during Round 2. His teammate, Lee Jackson had a terrible 6 point weekend. He's still quite safe for the showdown, but he might have a sleepless night or two if Snetterton practice doesn't go well. Kyle Ryde also had an abysmal performance with just 5 points, and Buchan has got him under pressure. Mackenzie is not safe either, and missing the showdown would be a disaster for the defending champ, despite his injuries this season. He scored 135 points in a six-race-stretch. That should be enough in this field to get the job done with consistent top-5 and top-10 finishes.

Anyway, bring on Snetterton in 2 weeks. If it rains, things could get really interesting.

Danny was unfazed. Total control at the front in Race 2 and Race 3 from a rider who does not consistently run in P1. Strong performance, and he has an opportunity to make a showdown after a disappointing 2022 campaign.
