It's a shame that Mari no longer posts - she'd also be able to give the full reason why. As I understand it Assen is in a region of Holland which was presided over by a strict protestant presence. The Assen TT is very old race dating back to the mid twenties. Any formal gathering or event other than church on a Sunday was prohibited by the religious zealots (please refer to this thread in its entirety again)
http://www.powerslid...religion-sucks/. The race was always held on the last Saturday in June which meant on the Sunday whilst the Aldermen were busy rounding up everyone to go to church the motorcycle worshipping heathens all buggered off to the Amsterdam brothels to get laid.
Incidentally - the fact that Assen is known as The Cathedral has nothing to do with the religious overtones historically. Assen is still a glorious flowing circuit and one of the best places to race motorcycles on the planet but in 2006 the circuit was shortened removing the Northern loop section in favour of lucrative development. Consequently it's not unusual to hear race fans lamenting 'Old Assen' as they weep into their pint of Tilburg. One journalist at the time compared the 'development' to 'cropping a Rembrandt and sticking it in a clip frame'.
