Lorenzo doubted he would catch Rossi

http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/87858

"I thought, 'okay, this race is going to be difficult,'" Lorenzo recalled. "Vale had good pace and he was going away. So I was patient, I waited a bit, caught my pace, improved my lap time with every lap, and at the end he was a little bit slower and I could take the race.

"He was really, really quick. But for the first two laps after he overtook me, he was maybe one second faster than me. But then the gap remained [the same]. Maybe five laps after, I started to catch him.

"Then I was worried that maybe he could stay with me to the end, but it was not like this so I could win."

Lorenzo reckoned he probably would not have taken so many chances to catch and pass Rossi if he had not already clinched this year's championship.

"When I was thinking about the championship, I had to be a little bit more patient and not take so many risks," said Lorenzo. "But now with the championship in my pocket, and at my favourite track, I could go for victory."

The result was not only Lorenzo's third in as many years at Estoril, but also ended a victory drought stretching back to the Czech GP in August. He said he had always been confident he would win again before the year was over.

"It's a lot of time that I didn't get a victory, but my confidence was still the same - very high," he said.

"I didn't worry about it, because maybe in those races I didn't have the best conditions and our rivals had improved. I understood that maybe at some other tracks I could win."

Simoncelli upbeat despite losing third

http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/87863

"I am really pleased with my race today," said Simoncelli. "We did everything right and I was able to maintain a good rhythm from the start to the end.

"Dovizioso was a little bit faster than me on the straights but I still thought I could beat him. Unfortunately I made a tiny mistake in the final turn and lost a little bit of speed onto the straight, which gave him the advantage over the line.

"It was a shame but I am still delighted because this feels almost as good as a podium to us.

"Over the last four or five races I have been consistently on the pace from Friday practice and we did it again here at Estoril. Obviously we still have to work to improve the bike, especially the electronics, if we want to be on the podium but maybe we can do that at Valencia."

Team boss Fausto Gresini reckons Simoncelli has now proved that he is among the very best MotoGP riders.

"I am really satisfied today with the progress shown by Simoncelli," said Gresini. "He had a wonderful race and showed that he is reaching the top level of MotoGP.

"I think fourth place is an excellent result for a rookie - it is just a shame he didn't make it onto the podium because he was there right up until the exit from the final corner. Anyway, it's still a good result.

"Now we need to think about what we have to do next to help him continue with the progress that led to this result. Congratulations to 'Sic' - I am happy and proud to be working with him."

Gresini's other rider Marco Melandri had another depressing race, falling back from sixth on the grid to finish ninth - over a minute behind the leaders.

"I am disappointed and upset because nothing has gone our way since the start of the season," said Melandri, who will leave MotoGP for a Yamaha World Superbike ride after next week's Valencia race.

"I don't know what else to say and I don't want to start talking about why this is happening to us. All I can say is that I am very disappointed."

Stoner apologises for mistake

http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/87859

"There is not much to say today, other than it's a shame, obviously," said Stoner.

"I was taking it steady over the first couple of laps getting the tyres up to temperature and then I was able to push a little harder to close the gap to the guys in front of me.

"When I got on the back of Jorge I wasn't pushing as hard as I had on the previous laps but I ran a little off line and lost the front. I tried to save it but I wasn't able to and I am really sorry to all the guys in the team because they have done a good job in difficult conditions to find a good set-up. We will try and make up for it in Valencia."

His team-mate Nicky Hayden finished fifth after a long battle with Andrea Dovizioso and Marco Simoncelli. But having qualified second, Hayden felt he should have delivered a better result.

"Fifth place alongside a crash for Casey isn't a brilliant result for the team - it has been a tough weekend on everybody but we will try to do better at Valencia," the American said.

With everyone relying on guesswork for set-ups in the dry race as every other session this weekend had been wet, Hayden admitted he had lost confidence and crucial ground mid-race.

"Today was the first time in my career that I have gone out to race in the dry without completing a single lap in those conditions before lining up on the grid," he said.

"Over the first few laps the bike worked really well, I felt good and I even managed to lead the race which hasn't happened for a while.

"In the middle part of the race I had a couple of moments on damp patches and lost my feeling a little. I got my rhythm back together towards the end and joined in the fight for the podium."

Rossi satisfied with podium and now aiming for final win

http://www.motogp.com/en/news/2010/Rossi+on+second+place+at+Estoril

"Like I said yesterday, a wet warm up and a dry race is a difficult one! I am happy about this weekend, we worked really well on the bike on the wet and this morning I was the fastest in the warm up, if it had been a wet race I could have been very competitive,” said Rossi.

“For the dry we started blind so I had to try to take some risks at the beginning because the setting was okay, but it was not enough because when Jorge got into his rhythm he was faster than me, I had no way to fight with him. I tried to stay with him but he was too fast.”

With Casey Stoner crashing out Rossi now sits third in the Championship, 19 points behind Dani Pedrosa with the final round in Valencia next weekend.

“Second place is positive for my Championship because I am back in third place and I'm not so far from Dani Pedrosa in second. I'm happy to have improved the setting of the bike but we are still not strong enough so we will try to improve for Valencia for a final win with Yamaha,” he concluded.

Not a brilliant race, but a great performance from Lorenzo. Proved a point to all the others and showed everyone why he is champion. Obviously the Yamaha was the bike to be on today, even Edwards got it somewhere near the front. It was a shame Simoncelli lost out so narrowly on getting a podium but more opportunities will come.

Lorenzo was heating up his tires before he smoked the field, nothing more, nothing less

Yes exactely, I actually heard he actually wanted to strat from last spot on the grid to make the race more interesting, or remove one spark plug from the engine, but was not allowed to.

I think that for the last race of the season he should be given a 125 cc bike or else it is a no match.

The battle for 3rd hmmm meh

All-black look for Rossi Ducati test

http://www.visordown.com/motorcycle...l-black-look-for-rossi-ducati-test/15252.html

World Champion Valentino Rossi is to ride his new Ducati MotoGP racer in an all-black black colour scheme at the post-season Valencia test session, rather than the team's Marlboro red colours, as a mark of respect to current employers Yamaha. The Italian was granted permission by Yamaha to test for Ducati at Valencia, despite Rossi's current contract with the Fiat Yamaha team.

Those eager to see Rossi riding the bike in the team's iconic all-red colours will now have to wait until next year.

What about that move by Edwards on Simochelli?

That was another of "race etiquette" catagory overtakes.
<
he only didn't shoot him in face.

I have to say if Dorna wants to make the races more interesting I suggest they only give one practice session. Watching the riders out there was like watching some noobs. Bikes tank slapping, riders high siding. I was hoping for some better up front racing but, I've seen much worse. Honestly Im surprised so many riders high sided, I thought that is what electronics are for, are they not?

Hayden: When most of the field are on med or hards, why the hell did you pick softs? I mean really?

Rossi: This was your chance to hand it to Lorenzo and blew it.

Stoner: Just stop, no......Stop.

Ben: Duct tape that .... and get back out there!
