Steve Plater has been hurt in a crash at this afternoon's NW200 practice.

The Honda rider was taken to hospital with a suspected broken wrist after crashing on the Coast Road.

Plater won the North West eight times, and it is thought that he may miss Saturday's race.

In a statement, a spokesman for the HM Plant Honda team said: "On the final lap of the Superbike Practice session Steve Plater had a crash at the final corner.

"Steve's injuries are not life-threatening and he was able to speak to the medical team and the HM Plant Honda Team Manager at the scene.

"He is understandably in pain and therefore has been administered with pain-killing treatment and is now in hospital where he can be examined further to establish the precise nature of any injuries he may have sustained.

"Steve would like to thank everyone for the numerous good wishes already received and the team will issue a further update in due course."

In today's practice pole positions went to

Clicked on this post and I shat myself. I read 'Steve Plater has....' and immediately feared the worse. I really struggle with road racing. I can barely watch it. I regard it as an anachronism, and that such powerful machines are inches away from such hazards as stone walls, buildings, lamp posts and kerbs horrifies me.

I am aware that these supremely talented guy's know the risks, and unlike thirty odd years ago, they are not compelled to take them, but the like of the TT, and the NW and the other associated Irish meets such as Ulster, The Southern 100, Skerries, and Killalane will continue to unsettle me by the very nature of the toll that they take.

Honda has confirmed Steve Plater has broken his left arm in two places following his crash during yesterday's North West 200 practice session.

The H.M. Plant Honda rider came off at Quarry Hill and was taken to the Causeway Hospital by ambulance.

Many who saw the high speed incident believe extra safety measures taken at the scene could have saved Steve Plater's life.

Race Director Mervyn Whyte says extra air fencing and bales were added to the area after a review just last weekend:-

also to miss Cadwell nxt week
