F1 2016 Season
 
I know a few here do watch F1, so why not have a topic about the 2016 season.

I'm not really excited at all about the upcoming season since I believe it will be another Mercedes romp to the world championship. About the only major unknown will be whether or not this is the year Brittney Rosberg mentally puts it together for the entire season so as to dismantle the Notorious H.A.M.'s stranglehold on titles. He ended last season on a high note, so one can only hope he continues his form when things kick off in Melbourne.

Of course the media is selling a story that Ferrari has caught up or hopefully caught up to the Mercedes pace because without that belief, TV ratings will continue downward as fans find better things to do. Ferrari will be fielding their first ever fully penned by James Allison, and they are ditching the infamous pullrod suspension that was a colossal waste of money, time, and results.

Bernie is continuing on his usual path of extortion, bribery, and strong-arming tactics. He shows no signs of dying any time in the near or distant future. To put it into perspective, he tried to personally qualify unsuccessfully for the Round 2 of the 1958 FIA Formula 1 World Championship at Monaco. The cars were still front engine drive, and of the 16 drivers who drove the actual race, only 2 are still alive; Sir Stirling Moss and Tony Brooks.

The man will not be deterred by death.

At any rate, because F1 drivers have turned into colossal pussies, they are demanding a halo to be installed on the cockpit to protect against debris and other sorts of things that can kill...in spite of the fact nothing would have saved Jules Bianchi. If the wishes/demands are met for 2017, I suspect the cars will be absolutely ghastly. Small price to pay for a series that has become so myopic, that it would take little effort to displace it from it's pedestal if anyone with deep enough pockets were willing to try.

Pastor Maldonado is out at Renault when his despotic government's oil company couldn't cough up the 40 million Euros to secure his seat for 2016. He will be missed precisely by no one. Kevin Magnussen steps in no doubt looking to give a large middle finger to Ron Dennis as year two of the McLaren-Honda experiment continues it's path of shittiness. But hey at least they do okay with that MotoGP thing right now.

Alonso will sulk through another year before fucking off to LMP1 I am certain. Button will also follow him. Dr. Helmut Marko will continue bashing Renault for another year.

Should be fun!

I am pulling for Renault this year, after the shit they had to put up with from red bull.
I dont think much will change at the front of the grid, hamilton, rosberg, and vettel.

Funny thing is how Marko is still mouthing off in spite of Renault agreeing to let them run rebadged engines. Though Marko is really Mateschitz's lapdog, so I'm sure Didi is the one behind this. God only knows why since when they won 4 straight titles, they barely even acknowledged Renault and then bash them to no end now.

I stopped watching midway through 2014, usually then just reading the race reports to see if anything interesting happened. Now I don't even do that.

Bikes are where it's at for me now. I've even stopped watching Indycar on the principle that Max Chilton has gotten a drive solely on Daddy's money.

Meh I don't care if Max Chilton has a seat. He's going to underperform regardless. Plus IndyCar goes back to Road America...plenty of reason to watch now. I have to buy tickets to Pocono in August. I skipped the race in 2015 because I had a bad omen about it. Glad I didn't go.

Some big news today though.

The engine token system is being scrapped in 2017. Means in-season engine development is back. Only caveat is you can only change things with a brand new engine. Either way this is welcome news since the engine development ban was one of the most illogical things to come out of the V8 era.

Renault unveiled the look of their 2016 challenger, the Renault R16. This isn't the actual car, just a show car.

Kevin (Jan) Magnussen
Carlos Sainz Jr (Ok he was a rally driver)
Jolyon (Jonathan) Palmer

The funny thing about the top half of the list is that outside of Keke, they were all midfield to backmarker talent. Murray Walker used to practically sit there jacking himself off talking about where Jonathan Palmer was on the grid back in the mid to late 80s. He had a few points finishes, but old Murray was always massively concerned with where Palmer was. Then you'd find out his engine blew up or he was circling around 15th place. Not even sure how that warranted a mention. But then again the whole British driver obsession fueled Murray quite a bit.

Keke was a good talent. Always thought he retired too soon. He made up too many excuses for why he retired though. His win at Detroit in 1985 with the FW-11 was one of his best drives with the consistency he displayed in that race.

But yeah anyway I don't know if it's a kindergarten per se. The kids still have to show talent. If Nico wins the title this year, his overall career would be more successful than Keke. I'm intrigued by Mick Schumacher and how he will turn out. The others I don't know how close they will get to F1 or not.

Agreed they have to have SOME talent, but their names help massively.

Bruno Lalli is just that. Bruno Lalli. But he decided to use his uncles surname and guess what? He had a strotosperic rise up to Formula One in about 3 seasons.

Nelson Piquet junior was another example I forgot.

I actually did like Bruno Senna a bit. His story is interesting.

BTW, taking his mother's surname is not abnormal in Brazil. He didn't take his uncle's per se.

Ayrton Senna da Silva. da Silva in Brazil is like Smith, so he went with his mother's surname as a way to set himself apart, thus Ayrton Senna.

He just copied what his late uncle did.

But did you know that Bruno did not race for almost 10 years? In the wake of his uncle's death, his father died a year or two later in a motorcycle accident, and his mother put a stop to his racing career. So when Hamilton, Rosberg, and the others were spending those years karting and so on, Bruno wasn't even allowed to race. He didn't pick up racing again till 2004. That he made it to Formula 1 in spite of that is still an incredible achievement imo. His formative racing years were completely lost.

I think he came into F1 at the wrong time though. The tires were no longer about flat-out racing but tire management and trying to generate heat quickly for qualifying purposes. He did have pretty decent racecraft in 2012. But not enough of it.

Fun side bit. He would have been in the 2009 Honda F1 car that became the Brawn GP01 had Honda never pulled out. If the Honda engine had been good, it kind of makes you wonder what 2009 might have been for Bruno Senna.

Nelson Jr. definitely should not have been in F1...he did pretty well in Formula E last year. He was awful when he raced NASCAR.
