The Italian has endured a miserable season, languishing in 17th in the rider standings while his team-mate Casey Stoner competes for the world championship.

Having already agreed to cancel his contract for 2009, Melandri said he could be replaced sooner after failing to finish in the points in the US MotoGP at Laguna Seca.

"I'm just waiting to see what I have to do. I have a contract with Ducati until the end of the year," he said.

"I'm a Ducati rider. If they want to stop with me then I have to do what they want, so I just have to wait."

Melandri said he was disappointed with his result in California, having worked his way from 15th on the grid to 9th, only to crash.

"I hit a marker or something going into turn one and my hand came off the handlebar, so I couldn't get the bike turned," said Melandri, who remounted to finish 16th.

"I took a heavy blow to my hand in the crash and needed a couple of laps to get back into the race because I wasn't sure how bad the injury was. The pain started to subside eventually but I was way back, lapping alone.

"I'm disappointed because after the first two or three laps I had a good pace together. It's a shame because it's another potentially good result ruined.

"I'm particularly sorry for the team because they have made a fantastic job and they deserved a good result."

Is anyone going to want to even hire Melandri after this season? I may be wrong, but I get the feeling he is not even trying, he gave up long ago and is just looking for a way out. Seems like a Hoffman sort of attitude. His "I'd rather be out, then try harder" attitude isn't a really good selling point.

I agree, he doesn't even seem to be trying anymore.
Elias and Guintoli started the season just as badly, and while they aren't setting the world alight, they do seem to have persevered and are beginning to make progress on the Duc, whilst Marco hasn't made any real progress, if anything he's getting worse, just seems to be going through the motions.
I hate saying this as I used to think he was a championship contender.

He is trying, it just isn't working and he cannot ride anywhere near the maximum due to his problems with the bike.

I see it pretty much the same way, but it's all conjecture because we are on the outside looking in.
One things for sure I haven't seen Marco crack it for a smile all year and I'm not sure we will get many out of him if he rides the green beast either.

Comparing him to Hoffman is a bit harsh. I don't think Marco's not trying. He's just not managing. And even though his season's been shite I don't think he'll end up without a bike next year. Not yet.
