Same with me.

I respect all the other world champions since I started following the sport in earnest when live telecasts of the races started in Australia in 1986. I was lukewarm about Alex Criville when he raced, likely because I was a Doohan tragic, but he wasn’t so bad, and later endeared himself to me by being a Stoner fan as a commentator, and while I think both Wayne Gardner and Kevin Schwantz are prone to saying idiotic things in their retirement, as balls out bike racers during their careers they were utterly unimpeachable.

I still think Rossi was a great rider and remains remarkably good, but I hate the off track machinations, which he never needed in his heyday anyway, and he has imo become progressively worse as he approaches his bike racing dotage.

No, but I saw reports of his commentary on European coverage when Stoner was riding for Honda.

Marquez should have an Apple picture on the back of his helmet/leathers... in the UK we have a saying "An Apple a day keeps the doctor away".

You half assed say that in jest but dont forget in 16, the official Motogp video game was called Valentino Rossi, The Game. That must have went over like a fart in an elevator because the following year it was back to MotoGp 2017.

At first, nobody really noticed, but when Rossi began to weaponized the willing media, a robust cult of fans, and the organizers in tow, particularly Race Direction's unwillingness to thwart or admonish his 05 punt, that I think was the biggest signal to Rossi, you're untouchable son, do and say whatever you want. It's only got worse from there.

The straw that broke the camels back for me, keep in mind I was already onto Rossi by 05, particularly given his antics to villainize Sete Gibernau, was when after the 2006 championship, the by then established and entrenched Cult and chickenshit media disparaged Nicky Hayden's championship almost from the moment Rossi crashed. Cue yellow smoke. Since then I've hated Rossi, his minions, the cowardly media, the organizers, etc. I blame Rossi for his share, which is a lot, but he's not the only one at fault, in fact I'd say Rossi has a small part, it's the organizers and the media that should bear most of the blame. Had they scolded him for his conspiracy theory that he got a bum tire during the race (oh the irony) and blaming Yamaha, Tony Elias, etc., they (media, fans, organizers) could have stopped him from becoming the monster he became. They disparaged Nicky to the point where the man emblazoned his leathers with the counter argument, "The Numbers Don't Lie". That is about as much of a 'fuck you' a Hayden clan could ever muster. Nicky was a "fluke", this narrative made its way into ever comment section, post, and general sentiment.

As you probably remember, this sentiment continued for 2007, and only got worse and worse. Stoner was disparaged, Lorenzo was disparaged, and now Marquez is the devil.

Thats about my timeline as well. Never was a Rossi fan or a hater as you knew the script, struggle on Friday, dont take to many risks on Saturday and depend on the SNS's to make you a hero come Sunday. The boppers bought into the narrative of '' me and Jeremy found something overnight" and the legend kept growing. They never figured out or wondered why a guy with so many wins had so few poles. You had to laugh when you heard them explain how he was a bad qualifier but was worth 3- tenths come race time. Never once did it occur to them that what they found arrived in a delivery truck. Even when he punted Gibernau i didnt lose any sleep because i didnt like Gibernau and most of you will remember i called him Gravelplow. I really started disliking his fans first after they raked Nicky over the coals for having the nerve to win a title and the following year after Casey wiped the floor with him is when i realized we were dealing with a sociopath. Rossi liked Nicky and never personally disparaged him for winning the title as he saw it as an anomaly, but he never came to Nicky's defense either. You saw the real Rossi after Stoner kicked his ass as he realized this cat was for real and it has been him and his fans denigrating every rider since then that has beaten him.
