Really? I went back and looked at the other rookies and their first seasons and he's right on the money, position and points-wise. He had a slow start to the year, but he seems to be of the 'slow and steady progress' school.

I read all the guff on here about how he 'didn't deserve' the ride. I don't agree. He's been a total company man for Tech 3 - riding that nail in Moto2 to actual results. Look at the other riders that have been on it - nowhere. He rode it to 7th/9th place in the championships and his replacements? Danny Kent is 22nd, Louis Rossi is 23rd. Bradders got three podiums.

Bradl's 'prestigious rookie' season saw him in 9th place with 135 points. On a clearly superior near-factory ride.

Simoncelli's'prestigious rookie' season saw him in 8th place with 125 points. On a clearly superior near-factory ride.

Bradders is 10th with 89 points and three races to go. If he gets his now-regular 6-8th place, he's looking at another 24-30 points by season end. Enough to outpoint the former WC? Maybe.

He's on a proper customer bike - Yamaha don't give Tech3 anything they don't pay for. Bradl and (formerly) Simoncelli have factory-spec bikes and they finished their rookie seasons almost exactly where Bradders will finish. And in those years there was no Marquez stealing all the points.

Maybe you could find another rookie that shows how poorly Smith is doing - because the Bradl/Simoncelli paradigm just isn't working for me.

Agree to disagree, then.

Even if Smith continues this hunt for places 6–8 and nabs those 30-some points, he's still shy of who we're comparing him to. And certainly with Simoncelli, and to a lesser extent Bradl, by the latter stages of their debut seasons, they'd developed to a point where it wasn't out of the question for them to latch on to a group battling over podium places. Bradders is regularly fighting the Ducatis. And you are right in that Smith isn't getting any factory support, unlike Sic and Bradl did/do, but the M1 is significantly better than the Ducati, even without factory help.

I like the guy on a personal level, and I admire the way he goes about his business, I just don't think he has the ability to stick around in any sort of meaningful way.

I lost the internet and was going to add:

But, I am relatively new to this and am only going from 'figures', which don't tell the whole story by any stretch. I have never seen the guy ride live (or any of the current crop of riders) and will bow to your (much better informed) opinion.

I guess I have a soft spot for Bradders having lived only a couple of miles from his home town when we were in the UK - he's the closest I have to a 'home team'. Kiwis have sucked at GP for years.

Anyway, I just wanted to say that I wasn't trying to argue an indefensible position, just that I am probably coloured with a ginger tint

I hope he does well.
