FORMER 250cc World Champion Marco Simoncelli lapped almost 0.5 secs slower than arch rival Hiroshi Aoyama at Sepang during day two of the MotoGP rookie test.

The Italian, following on from yesterday's 44-lap test, completed a further 56 laps, despite torrential rain interrupting the team's programme.

Simoncelli ended the day with a best time of 2:03.70, knocking almost full second off his day one fastest of 2:04.43.

At the end of Day Two Simoncelli said:

"I'm improving lap after lap. The times from yesterday prove this. Despite the weather we were able to take positive steps, gaining vital chassis balance.

I'm pleased with today's time. What's more, I'm really starting to enjoy myself. Tomorrow we will make alterations for more front end traction. From there we will do a race simulation."

Reigning 250cc World Champion Hiroshi Aoyama, riding for the Interwetten Honda MotoGP team on the second day of the Sepang rookie test, set a best of 2:03.25, compared to a 2:04.38 on day one.

The third and final day's testing starts tomorrow.

2010 MotoGP riders Hiroshi Aoyama and Marco Simoncelli both put in longs runs during a rain-free, if scorching hot, final day of testing at Sepang in Malaysia.

Riding for the newly formed Interwetten team, Aoyama completed a clean sweep of the three-day test - at which only the new RCV riders and Honda test team were present - by lowering his best lap time by almost one second to a 2min 2.3sec.

San Carlo Honda Gresini rider
Simoncelli improved by half a second with a best lap time of 2min 3.2sec.

The fastest dry free practice time during the 2009 Malaysian Grand Prix was a 2min 1.427sec (the race was wet), while the official race lap record stands at 2min 2.180 sec from 2008.

Both Aoyama and Simoncelli completed a longer run of around 15 consecutive laps during the final day, to get a feeling for their new RCVs in race trim.

Aoyama's time of 2min 2.3sec. not far off the 2min 2.180 lap record
good on him.

Impressive stuff by Aoyama. I didn't expect him to beat Simoncelli.

BTW Elias bike wasn't a "factory" bike, he did get some parts from HRC during the season but those mostly parts that Dani and Dovi rejected!

I know this is just a test, but its hopeful. I think plenty of Japanese have been waiting to cheer a countryman. Now I just hope he doesn't torpedo anybody like the rookies have during regular season. (BTW, anybody want to take bets now that Simoncelli is the first rookie to do something stupid?)

Thats going to be a hard bet for anyone to take. Better would be a prediction on what kind of fuck up it will be.

I say it will be Marco taking Valentino out on lap 1 turn 1 losail

After the Valencia test almost everone (but not me!) was saying that Aoyama would be finishing last in the points. I was and still am 100% sure this isn't going to happen. He's way more consistent than most rookies and getting real quick too.

It's gonna be an interesting fight for the rookie of the year title. I think Simoncelli is the kind of rider who will get more confident as the season progresses. He may crash a few times during the first half of the season though.
