Doctors at the medical tent reported that the rider was heavily dazed and could not even remember his name, but expect him to be fine to fly home in the morning.

I hope he's OK!

Gauloises KTMís Cyril Despres maintained his lead in the Dakar Rally, the Frenchman finishing fifth in todayís stage but still holding down a 36-minute lead over his teammate David Casteu.

Todayís stage was won by Jean De Azevedo, the Brazilian winning his first stage of the rally after battling with mechanical woes throughout this yearís event.

Despres didnít take any chances today after seeing what happened to Marc Coma yesterday. Despres rode most of the stage with Red Bull KTMís Chris Blais, finishing just over seven minutes behind De Azevedo.

In winning the second stage of his Dakar career, De Azevedo topped Polandís Jacek Czachor by two minutes with Latvian Janis Vinters finishing third.

The scare of the day went to Casteu, the Frenchman struggling with a fuel-injection problem, but being able to get it fixed when the special stage was delayed by 30 minutes because of heavy traffic on the road. Casteu finished sixth but still maintains a solid hold on second place in the overall standings over Blais, who finished fourth in todayís stage.

Blais is 53 minutes behind Casteu with only tomorrowís stage left to run.

Sad news

One thing I don't understand, how exactly did it happen? If it was a heart attack we can't really say the dakar 'claimed' him as such

From eurosport.com:

"The incident occurred 15km before the finish line of the liason when rider #26 stopped and complained of feeling ill. He then fell unconscious and medics were not able to resuscitate him."

That's really sad news, good thing to say that the Dakar didn't claim his life though.

Result: R. Gordon 8th final. I guess the Hummer made it. (Oh, by the way, Robby Gordon is not considered a NASCAR driver only (his brother is), Robby is known more for off-roading. He is a Baja champions and has won racing in SCORE as well in trophy trucks).

More news about this:

The death of a French motorcycle rider during the Dakar rally at the weekend might have been caused by a road accident.

42-year-old Eric Aubijoux died of a heart attack after completing the penultimate 14th stage.

"We have new elements to suggest Eric was the victim of an impact," Dakar rally general director Gilbert Ysern told French regional daily Sud-Ouest.

"Medical tests appear to show that there were fractures and local police have collected witness accounts which seem to indicate that there was an accident," he added.
